Volunteers Needed!
Look at any thriving community, dig a little beneath the surface and you will discover a group of dedicated volunteers. Volunteers are the root of a strong community! It takes all of us working together, giving and serving to make our communities a great place to live.
As a hospice volunteer, you will be part of a wonderful team of caring people who believe every little thing we do can and will make a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Our volunteer opportunities include direct patient and/or family companionship and support. Example volunteer activities include:
- Walking with patient in a garden, at their home, or care facility
- Listening to stories of a lifetime, of relationships and adventure, or to current worries and concerns
- Writing letters
- Reading books aloud
- Playing board and card games
- Playing a musical instrument
- Sharing a good conversation
- Sitting quietly together
- Watching movies
Volunteer Requirements
We do require 16 hours of training prior to volunteering. Our Hospice volunteer training is designed for you to explore Hospice, including the end of life issues that go beyond the physical pain endured by dying patients. Throughout the training, prospective volunteers will have opportunities to interact with Hospice staff including experienced volunteers. We will take you on a journey of issues surrounding the end of life process that will help you in working with the dying patient and his/her family. The training is directed toward your feelings and attitudes about the death and dying process, and hopefully answering all of your questions regarding Hospice volunteer work. Hospice of Montezuma mandates a background check and drug test for all volunteers and employees.
Volunteer Training
Our free volunteer training will prepare you to provide the companionship and support so many patients and families need when faced with a terminal illness. Please note that due to the current Covid-19 pandemic those trainings will be one on one with the Volunteer Coordinator at this time.
